Blender vs SolidCraft: Mesh Modeling or Parametric CAD

If the part needs exact dimensions and editable features, a mesh tool is the wrong shape of tool. If it needs to look good, CAD is.

Feature lines come from our directory entries and each project’s own page, checked 2026-10-17. SolidCraft is a young project; we have not used it for production work.

Two different ideas of a model

In Blender you shape a mesh: you push vertices, subdivide, sculpt, paint. The model is a surface. That is perfect for characters, props and scenes, and awkward for a bracket whose hole must be 8 mm and stay 8 mm after you change the thickness.

SolidCraft works the other way. Per its repository you sketch lines, arcs, splines and text, solve constraints and parameter-driven dimensions, then extrude, revolve, loft, shell, thread and pattern solids. You can edit or suppress a feature on the timeline and the model rebuilds.

The honest caveat

SolidCraft was added to our directory on 2026-10-14. It is open source, which means you can read the code, and also that you should read the issue list and release history before betting a job on it. Mature CAD packages have years of edge cases behind them; a new one may not.

If your actual goal is to 3D-print a simple part, try SolidCraft for the parametric part and Blender only if you need organic shapes. For a wider comparison, see how to choose a Blender alternative and the full alternatives table.

FAQ

Is SolidCraft free?

Yes. It is an open-source project, listed in our directory as free and open source.

Can SolidCraft replace Blender?

No, they do different jobs. SolidCraft is parametric CAD for dimensioned parts. Blender is a mesh-based creation suite with sculpting, animation and rendering.

Does SolidCraft work in a browser?

Its repository describes desktop, browser and CLI use, plus an MCP server for AI agents.
