Claude Ultra Timeline: Max 20x Renamed, 5-Hour Limit Dropped (Oct 30, 2026)

Live timeline · last updated · 1 entry in the update log

This is a plan-naming and session-limit change, not a model card. The useful facts for anyone budgeting Claude Code or all-day Claude work are the rename map, the prices that stayed put, the verified-account caveat on Ultra’s five-hour window, and the weekly limits that did not go away.

Timeline

On October 30, 2026 Anthropic renamed Max 5x to Max ($100/month) and Max 20x to Ultra ($200/month), said existing subscribers need take no action, and began removing the five-hour session limit for verified Ultra accounts while leaving weekly limits unchanged; as of Nov 1, 2026 the pricing page still lists Max at 5× Pro every five hours and every week, and Ultra at 10× Pro weekly with no five-hour limit for verified accounts plus $200/month in API credits versus $100 on Max.

We did not subscribe to Ultra, verify an account ourselves, or measure real message throughput. No anthropic.com/news post about this rename was found when we searched on Nov 1.

Timeline

  1. At 17:29 UTC @claudeai posts that Anthropic is renaming Max plans: Max 5x becomes Max, Max 20x becomes Ultra. Max stays $100/month and Ultra stays $200. Existing subscribers need do nothing. The same post says Anthropic is removing the five-hour limit for verified Ultra accounts, starting that day with most existing subscribers; newer accounts keep a temporary limit until verified, with an email when it is removed. Weekly limits remain unchanged. The post links claude.com/pricing.

  2. anthropic.com/pricing lists individual plans Free, Pro ($20 monthly / $17 with annual), Max ($100/month, “5x Pro usage every 5 hours and every week”), and Ultra ($200/month, “No 5-hour limit” with a footnote for verified accounts, “10x Pro usage every week”, and “$200 a month in API credits, up from $100 on Max”). The compare table repeats those multipliers. The FAQ “How are Max and Ultra different from Pro?” restates the same numbers and says both Max and Ultra include Fable for up to half the weekly limit.

  4. Claude Help Center article “What is the Ultra plan?” states that Max 20x is now called Ultra, existing Max 20x subscribers move automatically with no price change, Ultra costs $200/month on web subscriptions (mobile pricing may vary), Ultra includes 10× Pro weekly usage, verified Ultra accounts have no five-hour limit, unverified Ultra accounts keep a temporary limit, Ultra has a weekly usage limit across models plus a separate weekly limit for Fable, and verification is automatic from account and payment history—phone verification at checkout is a separate step that does not remove the temporary limit. Settings > Usage without a “Current session” bar means the account is verified.

Claude Help Center: What is the Ultra plan?

  5. The usage-limits help article says paid plans normally have a session limit that resets every five hours plus weekly limits, that verified Ultra accounts do not have a five-hour limit, and that usage across claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Desktop shares one pool. The Claude Code help page for Pro, Max, or Ultra repeats that Ultra has a weekly limit and that verified Ultra accounts lack the five-hour session limit; it also notes Max and Ultra have a separate weekly Fable limit shared across Claude and Claude Code, and that monthly API credits included with Max/Ultra cannot be used inside Claude Code or the Claude apps for usage credits.

Claude Help Center: How do usage and length limits work?

  6. The Opus product page’s availability section names Claude for Pro, Max, Ultra, Team, and Enterprise users. That line confirms Ultra as a current consumer plan name on a model page; it is not itself the rename announcement.

What changed on Oct 30, and what did not

The Oct 30 @claudeai post is the dated primary announcement. The rename map is short: Max 5x → Max, Max 20x → Ultra. The dollar amounts in that post are unchanged at $100 and $200. Anthropic also says most existing Ultra (formerly Max 20x) subscribers lose the five-hour session cap that day if their accounts are verified, while newer accounts keep a temporary cap until verification finishes.

What did not change is as important as the rename. Weekly limits stay. The post says so in one sentence. The pricing page we read on Nov 1 still prints Max as 5× Pro on both the five-hour and weekly axes, and Ultra as 10× Pro on the weekly axis only, with the five-hour cell replaced by “No 5-hour limit” plus a verified-account footnote. That is capacity reshaping for the top tier, not an unlimited plan.

We did not find an anthropic.com/news article for this change when searching on Nov 1. For dating and wording, the official X post plus the live pricing and Help Center pages are the primary record.

Why plan names and session windows matter more than another model card

Competitor write-ups split into two thin lanes. Short tech notes (for example The Verge’s Oct 30 blurb) mostly repeat the rename and the Apple-like Max/Ultra naming joke. SEO explainers restate the X post and stop. Both leave the budgeting question on the table: if you pay $200 because Claude Code and chat share one pool, does dropping the five-hour bar actually change how you schedule a workday?

Anthropic’s own Help Center is clearer than most secondary coverage. Verified Ultra still has a weekly ceiling, plus a separate weekly Fable ceiling. Unverified Ultra still sees a temporary five-hour bar. Phone number checks at checkout do not clear that bar. The signal to look for is Settings > Usage: no “Current session” bar means verified. That is the operational detail creators often skip when titles say “unlimited.”

This page stays off the Claude model release timeline on purpose. Haiku, Sonnet, Opus, and Fable dates are model events. Max and Ultra are subscription labels and meter shapes. Mixing them makes it harder to see whether a “Claude got better” headline is about weights or about how long you can keep a terminal session open before the meter resets.

Prices and multipliers as printed on Nov 1, 2026

From the individual plan cards on anthropic.com/pricing (mirrored on claude.com/pricing) on Nov 1, 2026:

Pro is $20 per month, or $17 per month when billed annually ($200 up front). Max is $100 per month and includes 5× Pro usage every five hours and every week, Fable for up to half the weekly limit, and $100 a month in Claude Platform API credits. Ultra is $200 per month and adds no five-hour limit for verified accounts, 10× Pro weekly usage, and $200 a month in API credits.

The FAQ on the same page says Max and Ultra are for people who work with Claude throughout the day and want longer uninterrupted sessions. That product framing matches the Claude Code help page: Pro and Max keep a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit; Ultra keeps the weekly limit; verified Ultra drops the five-hour session limit. Chat, desktop, mobile, and Claude Code draw from the same pool.

One credit detail that cuts against a naive “$200 API credits = more Claude Code” reading: the Claude Code help article says monthly API credits included with Max and Ultra cannot be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps, including for usage credits. Those credits are for the Claude Platform side of the house, not a second tank for the same IDE session that just hit a weekly cap.

What creators claim versus what Anthropic pages say

YouTube coverage on Oct 30–31 is thin: a few Shorts and short news-roundup beats, not a long Claude-channel explainer. The clips that stay closest to primary pages repeat the rename map, the unchanged $100/$200 web prices, the verified-account gate on dropping the five-hour limit, and the line that weekly limits stay. A recurring practical tip in those videos — move to Ultra only if the five-hour bar is what stops Claude Code, otherwise stay on Max — matches how Anthropic labels Max for all-day work and Ultra for longer tasks.

Weak spots show up more in creator scripts than on Anthropic pages: titles that sound like Ultra is unlimited; claims that “20x only ever meant the five-hour window” or that usage was cut in half; treating phone verification as the Ultra unlock; implying included monthly API credits refill Claude Code after a weekly cap; or folding the rename into apology / “gotcha” frames from reply threads. The Help Center still allows other caps at Anthropic’s discretion, keeps a temporary five-hour bar on unverified Ultra, and says Max/Ultra monthly API credits cannot be spent inside Claude Code or the Claude apps.

Treat hour-count anecdotes and affiliate Shorts as demand signal, not as Anthropic’s published allowance. Anthropic still says how fast you hit a limit depends on model, conversation length, and file size. Front’s rule here matches other verified timelines: primary pages date the facts; video is secondary color.

Not verified / What we could not check

  • Exact message counts, token budgets, or wall-clock hours included in “5× Pro” or “10× Pro.” Anthropic does not publish a fixed message quota on the pages we read.
  • How long “newer accounts” stay on the temporary five-hour Ultra limit, or what fraction of existing subscribers were already verified on Oct 30.
  • Whether every region’s checkout UI shows identical mobile App Store / Google Play prices; Help Center notes web Ultra is $200/month and says mobile pricing may vary.
  • An anthropic.com/news post announcing this rename. We did not find one on Nov 1, 2026.
  • Any change to Team or Enterprise seat pricing tied to this consumer rename. This timeline covers the individual Max/Ultra path only.
  • Third-party claims that Ultra removes weekly limits, or that included monthly API credits can be spent inside Claude Code. Primary Help Center pages say the opposite on both points.
  • Historical claims that “Max 20x only ever multiplied the five-hour window” or that weekly usage was cut when Ultra launched. The Oct 30 @claudeai post and the pricing/Help pages we read do not state that history; they say today’s Ultra weekly allowance is 10× Pro and that weekly limits remain unchanged.

Our take

If you already follow Claude model drops, keep this page beside the Claude model release timeline rather than folding it in. The Oct 30 change is about how Anthropic labels the $100 and $200 seats and how the top seat meters time. For people who hit the old Max 20x five-hour wall during long Claude Code sessions, verified Ultra is the first consumer plan Anthropic describes as having no five-hour session limit—while still telling you the weekly meter, and a separate Fable weekly meter, remain.

Budget the plan for the weekly shape, not for a fantasy of unlimited Opus. Confirm verification in Settings > Usage. Keep model-release dates on the model timeline, and keep company-financing dates on the Anthropic S-1 IPO timeline. Plan meters deserve their own dated record.

No. Verified Ultra accounts have no five-hour session limit, but weekly limits still apply, including a separate weekly limit for Fable, according to Anthropic’s Help Center.
