FFmpeg, ImageMagick, and Pandoc vs a Browser
The browser is a convenient worker. The shell is the worker you can pin, log, and run again tomorrow.
Read on 2026-10-29 from the pages named in Sources. We did not upload a test file, time a conversion, or audit a deletion job.
What each official page says the tool is
FFmpeg's about page calls FFmpeg a multimedia framework that can decode, encode, transcode, mux, demux, stream, filter, and play, and it calls the ffmpeg program a command-line tool to convert multimedia files between formats. It says the project is portable across Linux, Mac OS X, Windows, the BSDs, Solaris, and other systems.
The ImageMagick homepage calls it a free open-source suite for creating, editing, converting, and manipulating images, says it supports over 200 formats, and shows a magick command. It describes the design as scripting-first for batch jobs.
The Pandoc homepage calls Pandoc a universal document converter for markup. The format list on that page includes Markdown, reStructuredText, HTML, EPUB, LaTeX, docx, ODT, Jupyter notebooks, and others. We are not repeating the full list.
When the browser is the wrong worker
- The command has to be the same in CI next month. A website button is not a pin.
- You need a log of the exact invocation. A shell history is that log. A tab is not.
- The folder is larger than you want in a browser heap. The README's no-limit line does not resize your RAM.
- The file must not sit in a vendor account, and the video path on the official VERT instance would upload it. Run ffmpeg yourself, or point the UI at a daemon you host.
When the browser is the right worker
VERT's FAQ says the project uses those same three libraries, compiled for the browser, for images, audio, documents, and video, with non-video work on the device. That is a reasonable one-off: no install, and the file stays put for the families the FAQ marks as local.
You still give up the pin. A WASM build and a distro package can disagree on codecs and flags. We did not diff them. If the output must match a later script, start in the shell.

Choosing among the jobs is how to choose an online file converter. The family table is the format matrix. Repeating the job is batch conversion. Sending the result to a model is convert files before an AI model. VERT is the directory row. Every note is on the Front blog index.

- How to choose an online file converter: where the file goes, before which logo you pick.
- Batch file conversion: a browser loop, a shell loop, or a daemon.
- Format matrix by family: image, audio, document, and video, by the library named.
- Convert files before an AI model: prep is not a model score.
FAQ
Is a browser converter a build of FFmpeg?
VERT's FAQ says it uses FFmpeg for audio and video, ImageMagick for images, and Pandoc for documents. That is a project statement about its libraries, not a claim that every flag matches the command-line build.
Should a pipeline call a website?
Not if you need the same command later. FFmpeg, ImageMagick, and Pandoc are the tools their own sites describe for that. A website is for a one-off.
Does ImageMagick's 200 formats include video?
The homepage we read describes images and says over 200 formats. Video in this cluster follows FFmpeg and VERT's video doc, not that image total.
