How to Choose an Online File Converter
The useful question is where the file goes, and which job you have. A longer format list does not answer either one.
Read on 2026-10-29 from the pages named in Sources. We did not upload a test file, time a conversion, or audit a deletion job.
Name the machine that touches the file
An online file converter is a website that accepts a file and returns another format. That sentence hides the only decision that matters: the conversion worker can be the browser tab, a program on a computer you control, or a server run by someone else.
FrontierDot is a directory of developer and AI tools. We already list VERT, the open-source browser converter at vert.sh. We do not operate that site, we did not buy a lookalike domain, and this cluster does not copy its branding. The pages below record what the projects' own documents say, then stop.
Match the converter to the job
| If the job is… | Start here | Why that page |
|---|---|---|
| A one-off image, audio file, or document that should stay on the device | VERT | Its FAQ says non-video conversion runs on the device. |
| Video that should not be uploaded | Self-host the daemon | The video doc says some video needs a server, and the UI can point at yours. |
| The same conversion inside a script or a CI job | FFmpeg, ImageMagick, or Pandoc | Those projects publish command-line tools, not a website. |
| A browser path that cannot finish, and an upload is acceptable | Upload or on-device | CloudConvert and Convertio describe upload and deletion on their own pages. |
| A large archive to unpack on this computer | HatchZip | The README says the program has no networking code. Archives sit outside the format matrix. |

The format matrix sorts images, audio, documents, and video by the library each project names. Batch conversion covers a pile of files. What the VERT README says stays inside that repository and the live site's own sentences. Convert files before an AI model is the prep step, separate from a model score.
None of these pages is a benchmark. Evidence labels for model scores live on how FrontierDot labels benchmarks. A browser tool with a similar local-file claim, in a different job, is the AnyPS5 timeline. Every note on this site is on the Front blog index.
What we are not claiming
- We did not convert a sample file, so there is no speed chart and no quality winner.
- We did not count the formats behind a vendor's total.
- We did not watch a vendor delete a file. A deletion sentence on a privacy page is their statement.
- A homepage slogan and a FAQ can disagree. When they do, both sentences stay on the page that quoted them.
- We did not copy HatchZip's timing table. Those figures stay on the README that printed them.

- Upload or on-device: what VERT, CloudConvert, and Convertio say about the bytes.
- Format matrix by family: image, audio, document, and video, by the library named.
- What the VERT README says: the repository sentences, including the video asterisk.
- Convert files before an AI model: prep is not a model score.
- AnyPS5 timeline: the PS5-to-PC porting tool, dated from its own repository.
FAQ
What is an online file converter?
A website that takes a file and returns a different format. The file may be converted in your browser, or uploaded to a server. Those are different privacy deals, described in the upload-or-on-device note.
Is VERT the same product as this directory?
No. VERT is an open-source project we list. The directory page points at the GitHub repository. The guides only restate documents we opened on 2026-10-29.
Which converter is fastest?
We did not measure one. Pick from where the bytes run and from the job: one file on device, a script, or an upload you are willing to make.
Where does an archive belong in this choice?
With HatchZip, the extractor already in the directory. The format matrix keeps ZIP, 7z, and tar out of the image, audio, document, and video families. The README says the program does not connect to the network.
